Archeon was founded in 1994 as an archaeological theme park to bring Dutch history alive through authentic reconstructions and living history.
Archeon was established in 1994 with an ambitious goal: to create a living museum where the history of the Netherlands, from prehistory to the Middle Ages, could be experienced firsthand. The park was built on a former flower bulb field and designed around the concept of archaeological reconstruction. This means that all buildings, from Stone Age huts to Roman bathhouses and medieval farmsteads, are meticulously recreated based on actual archaeological findings and scientific research from across the Netherlands. The park aims to provide an educational and immersive experience, allowing visitors to step back in time and learn about ancient crafts, daily life, and the development of Dutch society through interaction with costumed 'residents' who portray historical figures and demonstrate historical skills. It represents a significant effort in public outreach for archaeology and cultural heritage.
